Cheruvathur is a developing city in the Kasargod district, in Kerala. The main town has a railway station, a bus stand and a large number of shops. It is situated on National Highway 17 between Payyanur and Nileshwaram. The ruins of a Dutch Fort on the Veeramala hills is a main attraction. It was built by the Dutch in the 18th century. This is a popular picnic spot from where the natural beauty of Kasargod river and its surroundings can be enjoyed. It is about 10 km. south of Nileswaram.

theyyamNileswaram: Nileswaram is the third major town in the district of Kasargod. It has been the cultural capital town of Kasargod district. It is situated between 2 rivers, Nileshwaram puzha and Thejaswini puzha. The town is home to folk arts, temple festivals, a palace, Kavus (sacred groves), old markets and a reputed weaver street. The Theyyam festival which is performed in several Kavus, tharavads (traditional Homes) and other sacred buildings attract large number of tourists.


valiyaparambaValiyaparamba: It is a small island in the Arabian Sea in the Kasargod district of Kerala. It is a prominent fishing center and a popular tourist spot. The island’s main source of income comes from agriculture and fishing. The island can be reached by boats.




bakelfortBekal Fort: Unlike most other Indian Forts, Bekal Fort was not meant for administration. It was not a palace either. All indications are that it was built for the purpose of defense. There are designated openings at the fort for defense as well as for attack. It spreads over 40 acre. It has many interesting features. The water tank with its flight of steps, the tunnel opening towards the south, the magazine for keeping ammunition and the broad steps leading to the observation tower. In 1992 the government of India declared Bekal Fort as a special tourism area.

ChandragiriRiverChandragiri River: Flowing through the banks of Chandragiri Fort, this river is 105 km in length. The river originates from Pattimala Hills in Karnataka and it flows through Kasargod and ends up in Arabian Sea. Boat trips are available from here to the nearby islands. The view from the bridge constructed over the river is magnificent. There is also Chandragiri Fort near the river which is from the 17th century. Kasargod, a few minute’s drive from Chandragiri has the nearest railway station. Mangalore, about 50 km from Kasargod has the nearest airport.

padannabackwaterPadanna Backwaters: Padanna Backwaters has spectacular avenues of coconut palm at the backdrop, and is adorned by crisscrossing canals. This entire area is blessed with immense natural beauty. Padanna, near Cheruvathur is in the district of Kasargod. Visitors can hire house boats or country boats to explore. The major occupation and attraction of this place is mussel cultivation. More than 200 families are making a living out of the resources here. Residents of Padanna include Muslims, Hindus and Christians. The main holy sites are Padanna Juma Musjid, Sree Mundya Temple, Town Miouddeen Masjid, and many other Masjids and temples.
